The fourth Count of Puerto Hermoso (Don Fernando de Soto y Aguilar), gave orders to form an image consecrated to the Holy Heart of Jesus at the beginning of the 20th century.
The statue of bronze and cast iron, 2.50 m high, was erected in 1916. It was originally placed on a turn table at the top of the mountain and was blessed on 12th January, 1921, by the Bishop of Málaga (Don Manuel González García).
In 1936, during the Spanish Civil War, it was destroyed, being taken from its base and thrown into the ravine, breaking in pieces.
A wooden Cross was installed at the same place in 1940, with the recovered remains of the old statue at its base.
Later, the Cross would be struck by lightning and replaced with another one on 20th December, 1994. The Enthronement of a new Holy Heart of Jesus took place on 28th February, 1995, by celebrating mass and enjoying a “Romería” (pilgrimage) beside the statue. This event is commemorated every year on 28th February, known as Andalusia Day.
Known as “El Santo” (The Saint), the present image is a work by the sculptor Miguel Fuente del Olmo, who was born in Andújar (Jaén) in 1940. He is a professor working for Seville University (Faculty of Fine Arts).
The current Holy Heart of Jesus is located on one of the highest points of Gibralmora Mountain, with open arms, blessing the town of Pizarra and its fertile plain.
